Liz is attending her first year at Minot State University, but she already has lots of job experience under her belt. Her senior year in high school she worked as a hostess at Texas Roadhouse two nights a week. Her boss said he had never met anyone before who knew so many people ???? ???? She would get random tips from people who just said it made them happy to see her.

I asked her mom if she thought Liz made and impact at her job and she said:

“Once when we were going there to eat, some other customers were waiting to leave and randomly, they started talking about their hostess who had Down syndrome and how much they enjoyed her. When we told them that she was our daughter, they hugged us!”

The job did not come without it’s struggles though. In the beginning, she had difficulty remembering the numbering system for the tables and struggled getting folks to the right table. But with one meeting, 2 coaching sessions, and accommodations that consisted of 3M sticky notes and a clipboard…she was on her way!

It goes to show just how easy some of the accommodations can be with a little communication…and look what an impact she made- not only with fellow co-workers…but also the customers!

She also worked at The Gifted Bean Coffee House for three year and her boss had this to say:

“The Gifted Bean Coffee House strives to employee individuals with disabilities because we recognize their value in the workplace. Liz was a great example of just that. She was a great barista, she taught our staff and customers a lot about the potential of individuals with Down Syndrome, and she makes a mean Italian Soda! We’d take her back in a heartbeat.”

Keep on rockin’ it Liz!!
