“Don’t go quitting your day dream Nella….and never put off until tomorrow what you can avoid all together. Wanna go grab happy hour?”

I was never an office-sit-behind-the-desk type person. I was always caught day-dreaming, or heading to the water-cooler for some conversation. I am the “people person” I always tell my hubby when I am asking him to edit something or create a document for me in Excel. But yet, here I sit, at my desk…in my home office…feverishly typing away. Except now, instead of a water cooler, I have my entire fridge and my “conversations” are with a much larger audience (YOU!). I am not talking about what I ate for lunch, but something I am so passionate about and if you would have asked me in my twenties what I would be doing now…this would be the farthest thing from it.

My hubby used to tell me “you should start your own business.” My reply was always, “heck to the no!” That was NEVER something I ever felt compelled to do. Then one day…he said, “Look at you, running your own organization.” It was something that happened so organically I didn’t even realize it had happened. I have done many, many different jobs in my lifetime…from working in a Bingo Hall, driving a train (yes, I drove a train! around a park…but a train no less :)) to slinging drinks and food. With each job I took away a new skill, learning something new an different about life and about myself.

Job opportunities are so important for us all, and it is no different for people with Down syndrome. We are all forever growing and learning!! I have some wonderful stories of of success in the workplace coming up…but if you are an employer of any type of business, I ask that you consider hiring someone rockin’ that extra chromosome. Not only are these opportunities important for them, but I have heard it time and time again from boss’s and co-workers what an impact they have on the work culture and just the business in general. And if you already have, then you understand what I mean!! Not only are they hard workers, they bring a level pride, compassion and overall awesomeness to the workplace…and that is priceless!!
