Lucia (who goes by Lucy) will begin her second year this fall at Northern Virginia Community College. She plans to transfer to a four-year college in the future, and her goal is to have a career in writing and performing arts.

In her scholarship application, Lucy described herself as a creative person who loves music, creative writing, dancing and theatre. She has written songs, scripts, stories and poems. In high school, she was in the National Honor Society and also won her school’s talent show sophomore year. She received the Silver award for Girl Scouts and is the only person with Down syndrome to have climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa. She works at American Eagle Outfitters and also works as a greeter at her church.

Lucy shared with us that “I want to advocate for anyone who has intellectual challenges. I want to inspire them with my journey to overcome my challenges. Becoming an advocate helps me to find my inner voice.” You have already greatly inspired us, Lucy! Keep on rockin’ it at NVCC!
