Kent State Student With Down Syndrome Awarded Ruby's Rainbow Scholarship | Kent State University
Kent State University student and Medina resident Erin Hawley is the 2016 recipient of a $3,000 Ruby's Rainbow scholarship. Ruby's Rainbow grants scholarships to adults with Down syndrome who are seeking post-secondary education, enrichment or vocational classes.

Ruby was born in Austin, Texas, in December 2010 - a month early, much to the surprise of her parents, Liz and Tim. At Saginaw Valley State University, he takes three classes, plays cymbals in the marching band and participates in several clubs. Despite the uncertainties, Susan and her husband, Ray, have always been advocates for their son and chose to include him in general education classrooms. Down syndrome is a genetic condition that occurs when a person has an extra copy of chromosome 21; it affects about 400,000 Americans, according to the National Down Syndrome Society.
