William Fitzgerald, Jr. – Think College at Winthrop University (Maudie’s Scholarship Award)
2020
William is this year’s Ruby’s Rainbow Maudie’s Scholarship Award recipient. This fall, he will begin attending the Think College program at Winthrop University, where he will major in Public Speaking and Communications. In high school, William was in the National Honor Society and a Key Club leader. He earned his Eagle Scout rank at age 15, making him the first scout with Down syndrome to accomplish this milestone.
William has an extensive volunteerism history, having donated his time and effort in schools, churches and performing arts centers. He is also the founder and chief officer of a nonprofit organization called William’s Community Support Program (WCSP), which focuses on mobilizing others to feed their hungry and homeless neighbors and to advocate for individuals with disabilities. William has earned the Presidential Volunteer Service Award for six years for his high level of volunteerism. His goal is to become an advocate for laws that support people with disabilities in reaching their goals and dreams. He says, “I think I am setting a good example for inclusion everywhere.” We agree! We think you rock, William – we are so proud of you! Keep on rockin’ it at Winthrop!
