Kirsta’s College Drop-Off at Bethel
March 7th, 2018
When I started on this journey of having a child with a tiny little extra chromosome, there were so many unknowns. I have always been honest about not knowing ANYTHING about Down syndrome before Ruby came into my life, and knowing what I know now that makes me sad to think I went ALL those years without that kind of magic. My mind quickly went to her future shortly after her birth which is pretty much why Ruby’s Rainbow exists. My desire, my NEED to see a bright future for my own daughter is the driving force behind what I do. It is so exciting for me to see what our recipients have accomplished and continue to accomplish. But, as much as I want Ruby to be as independent as possible, there is that fear of this mama not being able to let go… letting her break away from the shelter under my wing and go out and learn from the world. To go off and chase her OWN dreams, make her OWN mistakes and create her OWN life. I know I have quite a ways to go, but I really wanted to see what letting go might look like…what this might feel like. I also wanted to give hope to other families (including myself) that this CAN BE DONE.
So I decided to grab my side-kick Enjoying the Small Things – Kelle Hampton and hang out with Kirsta and her family as they drop her off at Bethel University for the very first time. It was a whirlwind of emotions y’all and an amazing way to kick off our biggest fundraiser of the year. The one that helped 47 people rockin’ it just like Kirsta go for their college dreams last year.
So grab your tissue and watch this video of one family’s journey. And then if you feel inspired to help more people like Kirsta spread their wings and fly…go to www.321pledge.org and take the Pledge. $21 is easy, y’all. And it means SO MUCH to people like Kirsta who are going for their college dreams! AND the sharing means just as much as the donation itself so PLEASE SHARE! Help me show the world how capable people with Down syndrome are!! Our goal is $150k by World Down Syndrome Day…I believe in this community!! WE CAN DO IT!! Last year we raised $135k…so let’s raise the bar just a little bit and show people with Down syndrome that WE BELIEVE IN THEM. Let’s invest in their future, y’all.
