Lucy Haugland: Bethel University – BUILD
2020
Lucy is a two-time Rockin’ Recipient who attends the BUILD program at Bethel University. She loved her first year at Bethel, where her favorite class was American Sign Language and her favorite extracurricular was being a member of the dance team. She also loved her internship working for the school magazine, and was active on the Special Olympics Unified bowling and basketball teams.
Lucy is a self-advocate, and spoke to the Bethel Board of Directors in support of preserving the BUILD program in the face of major budget cuts. Because of her and others’ convincing testimony, the board chose to continue funding the BUILD program. Lucy’s advice for other students with Down syndrome who are entering college is to get involved and participate, so you can make lots of friends. We think that’s great advice, Lucy! We wish you all the best in your second year at Bethel!
