This, you guys. Brooke is the first in Phi Mu history with Down Syndrome and I just love this letter from one of her sorority sisters, Mary. She is attending the University of Louisiana Lafayette, is very much involved in campus life and has grown so much (as we all do) from her time there!
“The Alpha Sigma Chapter of Phi Mu welcomed Brooke Hebert into our sisterhood with open arms in the fall of 2015. When Brooke went through recruitment her exceptionalities were discussed among the chapter. Many girls did not know much about individuals with Down syndrome. But the ladies of Alpha Sigma saw a light in Brooke that they had seen in many Phi Mu’s before her. They knew Brooke belonged in our sisterhood, no matter her differences.
I have watched Brooke turn heads, not due to her Down Syndrome but due to her joy, kindness, humor and rocking dance moves. Whether is be tailgating at a football game or at meetings, Brooke brings with her funny stories and a lot of sass. She has a way of seeing when people are upset and knowing just how to comfort them. She benefits socially from being surrounded by her peers. Brooke brings out the best in many of the ladies in Phi Mu and she even reminds us all to be a little better, kinder, and more patient. Brooke has shown our chapter that even though she has things that make her different than the rest of us, she is a lot more like us than we ever knew. She has good days and bad days. She has boyfriend problems, school stresses and a bit of a coffee addiction, just as most of us college girls. She loves her friends, getting dressed up and spending time with her girlfriends.Brooke has been a walking example of how individuals with Down syndrome are more like us than different from us. She has grown as a person by being part of an organization built around love, honor and truth. She has opened the eyes of not only Phi Mu, but of the entire greek community. She has shown us all that no matter our differences we are all hardworking ladies doing our best to make a difference in this world.”
Keep on rockin’ it Brooke!! We are so proud of you!!
