Rockin’ Recipient Luke Drumright was in the marching band in high school, so naturally he wanted to continue once he got to college. Luke is the first person with Down syndrome to be in the Saginaw Valley State University Marching Band and totally rockin’ it! His mom sent this video of him on the field at a game and you can see for yourself how happy it makes him:

He also expressed his desire to live on campus and this year he is living in the dorms three days a week and lovin’ it. And you know what? As much as he is gaining from this experience, those around him are also benefiting. His Drumline Coach, Patrick, says “Luke has been a delight to have in our band. He is friendly, respectful and works hard to have his music prepared for each rehearsal. But what I appreciate the most about Luke is the joy and energy he brings to the table. Each performance, sectional, rehearsal he shows up excited to be there and ready to do whatever work needs to be done.“
His new roommate and campus mentor(pictured) added: “The first time I met Luke, I knew he would be just as much of a role model for me as I hoped I would be for him. His loving and caring personality makes me realize just the type of person I need to be towards others! He also maintains high standards for his future goals, and I have expectations that he will achieve every one of them.”
Luke and another campus mentor, Erin (pictured) are speaking together at a conference at SVSU about how he got there and his experiences. She says that “Luke has shown repeatedly that inclusion is not only powerful for a student receiving special education services, it is a learning experience for all. He has taught me how to have patience inside and outside the classroom and also inspired me to set high standards for myself, and work hard to achieve them. He is a fantastic example of someone having determination. Luke is truly a blessing to me, and anyone else he comes in contact with.”
I say it all the time, but inclusion isn’t just for the person being included, I see it every day with Ruby. She inspires so many through her spirit and determination and everyone benefits!
Happy Friday, ya’ll!!!
