Mark Hublar

Mark J. Hublar was born in 1964 with Down syndrome. The doctors told his parents to, “Put him in an institution.” His parents said, “We’re taking him home!”

With the support of his family, Mark has held several different jobs as a reliable employee. He has been a partner in two different businesses and now has his own business as a motivational speaker.

Mark has been an advocate for people with disabilities almost all his life. He has spoken to businesses, schools, parents, and self-advocates to help them understand that people with disabilities also have abilities. That they can be great employees, contribute to society, and reach their full potential if they are just given a chance. His goal is to help everybody with a disability have a real job and a real life.

Mark graduated from Jefferson Community Technical College with a three-year degree in Public Speaking. Additionally, he completed the Business Leadership Series training classes at the Indiana Institute of Disability and Community at Indiana University.

He has lobbied members of Congress on Capitol Hill to pass important legislation, including the ABLE Act. The Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Act of 2014 allows states to create tax-advantaged savings programs for eligible individuals with disabilities.

Mark has worked with the Arc of Indiana in presenting a program that enables special needs individuals to transition from workshops into mainstream jobs. He has also worked with the Arc of Indiana in presenting a program that educates individuals on opportunities for independent living.

He was a team leader for the “Work to Include” (WTI) Initiative, promoting its vital services which includes a billboard campaign in Southern Indiana. Work to Include is an extremely important initiative that advances employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities.

Mark is currently working with the Center on Community Living and Careers (CCLC); a center located within the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community (IIDC) at Indiana University. In collaboration with the Division of Disability and Rehabilitative Services (DDRS), the CCLC is heading up the formation of a Family Employment First Coalition (FEFC). The Family Employment First Coalition will comprise of key family and disability advocacy organizations throughout the state of Indiana. The Coalition’s mission is to collaboratively improve the knowledge and efforts of each organization as well as create meaningful change in transition to adulthood and competitive integrated employment outcomes for young adults with disabilities in Indiana.

Along the way, Mark has been recognized by several high-profile organizations for his contributions to the advancement of individuals with disabilities. Some of these include:

  • Citizen of the Year – Down Syndrome of Louisville

In the meantime, I like hanging out with my roommate, my boyfriend, and my other friends at Hickory and Greensboro and Canada.

I also love knitting and making hats.

I take part in Special Olympics in tennis, bowling, and swimming.

2020-2023 Rockin' Recipient

Donovan O’Malley

My name is Donovan O’Malley and I am from Mobile, Alabama and I live with my mother and father. I attended a local Jesuit school Spring Hill College where I studied General Studies with two consecrations in Communications and Sports Management. When I was a student I was the Varsity Men’s basketball team’s team manager where I kept track of the clock at practices, the towels, waterbottles, and setting up and breaking down equipment they used. I graduated from Spring Hill College May 11th, 2024. I did enjoy my time in college of being included with other students and athletes by having a number of teams letting me sit with them at lunch which led to my popularity.

During the present I am working at Spring Hill College recreational center’s front desk on a volunteer basis. My main job is to monitor the front doors of those coming and telling them to sign in, in the binder before they can come in. At the end of the day I make sure that all the doors are locked, and things are picked for safety and security. One hobby that comes to mind is to go golfing with my father and sometimes my brother in law which helps me to feel I’m in control and at peace where in the real world can be hectic. Another hobby is watching TV which I do enjoy as an escape world where I can be able to have something that I can turn to instead of focusing on life as is. The final hobby I can think of is to travel to Chicago and Omaha to see my siblings which we do every summer if it works out. I love when I go. I usually travel with my mother and we always have a blast together. I am an uncle of 4 nephews and 2 nieces.

The reason why I wanted to be a part of the Advisory committee is to be able to learn from fellow members perspectives to make myself a better friend and advocate. I am using this group as a resource to grow my advocacy career. And of course to represent the organization to the highest standard of my abilities. The second reason why I joined is to be able to work with a team collectively “from all of our abilities not our disabilities” which gives me purpose and dignity.

Adian Milligan

I graduated in May, 2024 from Villanova University. I work at Villanova in dining services and at the Haverford YMCA as an aquatic instructor aid. I also started a salsa business called Aidan’s salsa. I sell my salsa at local pop-up events and have donated lots of salsa as baskets for Special Olympics, Children’s Hospital Buddy walk and the Delaware County Down syndrome Interest group. I also brought my salsa and chips to a refugee diner in Philadelphia with my good friend Luke. I want to keep making and selling my salsa and donating to important causes.

(Check out Aidan Salsa here!)

I like helping other people and motivating others to go for it and make their dreams come true. I want others to go to college and have the chance to be independent. I also like supporting organizations that help others. Because I went to Villanova, I found out that I like living on my own. I am now planning to move into an apartment with another Villanova United student in October. I can not wait to live on my own and have my own apartment.
