Educators and researchers are still discovering the full educational potential of people with Down syndrome which is another great reason why inclusion is so important. Ruby blows me away on a daily basis with the new things she is learning (and I have high expectations!).
It may look a little different than the work of her peers, but she is PROGRESSING…taking HUGE strides. Some people have asked about cognitive delays and IQ’s and standardized testing.
The truth? While these tests measure certain aspects of their learning capabilities, they miss out on many other important areas of intelligence. Areas that, in my opinion, make this world and brighter, more interesting place to live in. Ruby would score off the charts in insight and loving someone for who they are…and to me that is a pretty important skill to have in society…am I right?!
As we are still learning about the capabilities of people rockin’ that extra chromosome and how they learn best I can only imagine what the future holds for them if we KEEP GIVING THEM THE OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN!!!
